Where is Stevenson Ranch, California?

Stevenson Ranch is a census-designated place governed by Los Angeles County, not a city. It lies west of Interstate 5 and the city of Santa Clarita: Santa Clarita's Valencia neighborhood is to the east and northeast, Newhall to the southeast, and unincorporated Valencia to the north.

It has two major subdivisions, Westridge in the north and Stevenson Ranch proper in the center and south, connected by The Old Road. It uses ZIP code 91381 and area code 661.

Is Stevenson Ranch part of Santa Clarita?

No, and it is not part of the City of Los Angeles either. Because it is unincorporated, Los Angeles County serves it: the Sheriff's Department's Santa Clarita Valley Station handles law enforcement and the California Highway Patrol handles traffic enforcement.

In 1989 the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) rejected Santa Clarita's bid to place Stevenson Ranch in its sphere of influence, a step toward annexation. LAFCO also rejected a drive to incorporate Stevenson Ranch and nearby neighborhoods as a new city called Sunset Hills, citing a small tax base.

What is Stevenson Ranch known for?

It is a master-planned community. Dale Poe Development Corp. bought the land in the early 1980s, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved the first phase in late 1985, and construction started in 1988. About 1,500 homes were built by 1996, when Poe's heirs sold their interest to Lennar Corp. Poe Parkway is named for the developer, and many other streets carry authors' names, such as Hemingway, Thackeray and Shakespeare.

About 1,000 acres are set aside as parks, recreation areas and open space, and the community backs up to Mentryville, an oil town founded in 1875. Six Flags Magic Mountain is about 3 miles north. Stevenson Ranch has also been a filming location, including for the Showtime series Weeds and the film Pleasantville.
