The Antelope Valley is a valley in northern Los Angeles County and southeast Kern County that forms the western tip of the Mojave Desert. It spans about 2,200 square miles between the Tehachapi, Sierra Pelona and San Gabriel Mountains, and its principal cities are Lancaster and Palmdale.
The valley lies north of the San Gabriel Mountains, southeast of the Tehachapis and northeast of the Sierra Pelona Mountains, and opens east toward the Victor Valley. It is bounded by the San Andreas and Garlock fault systems.
Much of the Los Angeles County side is laid out on a one-mile grid. Lettered avenues run east–west, starting with Avenue A on the Los Angeles–Kern County line, and numbered streets run north–south from Division Street (10th Street West, 20th Street East and so on).
Lancaster is the largest city, and Palmdale is the other principal city; the Lancaster–Palmdale urbanized area is home to 372,287 people. Rosamond, California City and Lake Los Angeles are the next-largest communities.
Smaller communities include Quartz Hill, Leona Valley and Antelope Acres on the west side; Littlerock, Pearblossom, Sun Village and Llano on the east side; and Mojave in the north. Acton lies just south, outside the valley proper.

Commuters use State Route 14, the Antelope Valley Freeway, along with Sierra Highway and the Angeles Forest and Angeles Crest highways, to reach the San Fernando Valley and the Los Angeles Basin. Metrolink's Antelope Valley Line stops in Lancaster, Palmdale and at Vincent Grade/Acton.
Aerospace: the valley is nicknamed the Aerospace Valley. Edwards Air Force Base lies east of Rosamond, 37 miles northeast of Palmdale, and U.S. Air Force Plant 42 in northeast Palmdale is home to Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems.

Its name: the valley is named for the pronghorn that once grazed here in large numbers. From 1882 to 1885 it lost 30,000 of them: heavy snows drove the herds east, many starved rather than cross the railroad tracks, and settlers hunted most of the rest.
